Choosing the atoll is more consequential than choosing the resort. The atoll sets the transfer time, the reef quality, the cost band, and — most often — the kind of week the journey will hold.

There are twenty-six administrative atolls. We work across most of them. A short field guide.

North Malé · South Malé · Vaavu

The closest atolls to Velana. Reached by speedboat in thirty to ninety minutes. Lower transfer cost. Easier on jet-lagged travellers.

Resorts here are usually larger and more established. The reefs are decent but well-trafficked. The atoll is right for short trips, for first visits with limited time, and for returning guests who prize convenience over remoteness.

Houses we return to: One&Only Reethi Rah, Velassaru, COMO Cocoa Island.

Baa · Lhaviyani

An hour by seaplane. Baa is a UNESCO biosphere reserve — the reef life is among the most consistent in the country, and the manta season (June to November in Hanifaru Bay) is one of the country's signature events.

Lhaviyani sits just above Baa, with fewer resorts and a quieter overall atmosphere.

Houses we return to: Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Soneva Fushi, Six Senses Kanuhura.

Noonu · Raa

Forty to fifty minutes north by seaplane. Noonu holds some of the country's most architecturally distinguished houses; Raa is quieter still.

The reefs are excellent. The atolls are less developed than Baa. The cost band is usually higher.

Houses we return to: Soneva Jani, Velaa Private Island, Cheval Blanc Randheli.

Ari · South Ari

Forty minutes south by seaplane. South Ari is whale-shark country — sightings are year-round but most reliable from November through April. The reefs are open and varied; the dive sites are world-class.

Houses we return to: Conrad Maldives, Lily Beach, Constance Halaveli.

Gaafu · Addu · the deep south

The country's far reaches, ninety minutes by seaplane or a domestic flight plus speedboat. The atolls are vast — Gaafu Alifu is one of the largest in the world. The reefs are some of the least visited. The transfer cost is notable.

For a returning Maldives guest looking for genuine quiet, the deep south is where the country is least crowded.

Houses we return to: Six Senses Laamu, Park Hyatt Hadahaa.

The atoll is the country. The resort is the house. Choose the country first.

What we recommend

For a first visit with five to seven nights: North Malé or Baa. For a honeymoon: Baa or Noonu. For a returning guest with ten nights and a willingness to fly further: Laamu, Gaafu, or a two-atoll journey across Baa and Noonu.

The wrong atoll choice is one of the few mistakes a Maldives journey rarely recovers from.

Begin a letter and we will compose against the right atoll, not the loudest brochure.
