About Muli

Muli sits at the eastern edge of Meemu atoll, about 140 kilometres south of Malé — far enough that the swell that powers the Kaafu breaks usually arrives here a little cleaner, a little longer. The island is unusual in that two real surf breaks sit within reach of the same harbour: 'Muli Inside', locally called F1 for its speed, is a long fast right that walls up on a southwesterly swell; 'Muli Outside' — Mushrooms — sits further out and reads gentler, with longer rides and a more forgiving section. The rest of the island is working Meemu. Muli is the atoll capital, so there's a council office, a small high school, the harbour where the tuna boats unload in the late afternoon, and a tea-room that holds the evening hour. The channel off the eastern shore is one of the most reliable dolphin coasts in the country — pods of spinners along the boat in the late afternoon, and an 85% sighting rate that's quietly held by local boatmen rather than advertised.

Muli itineraries (4)

  • The Two-Break Days3 days · intermediateOur usual suggestion

F1 and Mushrooms from the island itself — the dawn paddle to the inside wall, the outside point when the swell fills, and a guide who reads which of the two owns the morning.

Requires · Comfortable on reef waves at head height

    1. Day 1F1 at first light · the fast wall · breakfast at the harbour after.
    2. Day 2Mushrooms on the filling tide · the long point · the easy exit earned.
    3. Day 3The pick of the two by the morning's wind · the last session at golden hour.
  • The Outer Points3 days · advanced

The named points within a fifteen-minute boat — Boahurra, Mulee Point, Veyvah Point — surfed off a held dhoni with nobody else on the peak. The southern atolls' quiet argument.

Requires · Advanced surfer · solid reef experience

    1. Day 1The dhoni out at dawn · the first point read and ridden.
    2. Day 2The swell chart's pick · a second point · lunch on the boat.
    3. Day 3The best of the three repeated · the week's wave found.
  • The Flat-Day Water2 days · no surf required

For the company of surfers, or the swell's days off — wing-foil and SUP on the lagoon, the dolphin channel at dusk, and Meemu's named reefs (Shark's Tongue, Veyvah Thila) for divers and snorkellers.

    1. Day 1The lagoon's glass morning · foil or paddle · the dolphin channel at dusk.
    2. Day 2Veyvah Thila's gentle pinnacle · the working harbour's afternoon.
  • The Southern Surf Week5 days · the full season

The whole Meemu register drawn against the forecast — both home breaks, the outer points, the flat-day lagoon, and the town's working rhythm holding the evenings. The south, before the crowds find it.

    Requires · Intermediate and up

    1. Day 1The forecast read on the verandah · the week drawn swell-first.

Muli excursions (8)

  • F1 · the inside wallSurf · Dawn & dusk sessions · Mar–Nov

The wave the locals named for its speed — a fast, barrelling right that walls up on a southwest wind and runs shallow before its kind exit. Paddled from the island's own shore; no boat, no queue.

    Requires · Intermediate and up

  • Mushrooms · the outside pointSurf · By tide · Mar–Nov

The outside right that catches more swell — long tubing walls with an easy exit at the corner, the rest-day wave that keeps getting promoted to the main event.

  • The outer points by dhoniSurf · Half day · Mar–Nov

Boahurra, Mulee Point and Veyvah Point within a quarter-hour's boat — the named rights of the southern atolls, surfed with nobody to share them.

    Requires · Advanced

  • The dolphin channelWater · 90 minutes · late afternoon

Meemu's eastern channel is quietly one of the country's most reliable dolphin coasts — spinner pods along the bow most evenings, held at the golden hour.

  • Shark's Tongue & the kandusDive · Two-tank morning

Meemu's named register — the reef-slope "dormitory" where grey reefs and silvertips stack on the incoming current, and the Mulaku Kandu drifts that almost nobody else dives.

Requires · Open Water · drift experience for the channels

  • Veyvah ThilaDive · Single tank

The gentle pinnacle off the neighbouring island — five to twenty metres, mild current, and the photographer's favourite hour in the atoll.

    Requires · Open Water

  • The foil & paddle afternoonWater · Half day

Wing-foil, e-foil and SUP on the lagoon's glass — the flat day turned into its own discipline, kit and coaching held at the surf house.

  • The harbour supperTable · Evening

Tuna off the afternoon boats, grilled at the harbour edge with the town finishing its working day around you — the atoll capital's honest table.

Getting to Muli, in full

  • Domestic flight · to Muli itself

The island's own airstrip opened in 2025 — a thirty-five-minute hop from Velana on the scheduled days, the board bag walked from the apron to the house.

  • Speedboat · the long run south

Around three hours by sea, held privately and read against the weather — the honest road when the flight days fight your dates.

  • Private charter

A chartered light aircraft when timing must be exact — quivers, camera kit and the season's narrow windows all carried.

Best time to visit Muli

  • The surf season · Mar — Nov

The southeast swell runs long and clean this far south — the home breaks work most of the season, and the points fill on the bigger pulses. West and southwest winds groom it.

  • The peak pulses · Jun — Aug

The season's biggest swell — F1 at its fastest, the outer points at their best, and the safety ski earning its keep. The advanced surfer's window.

  • The quiet water · Dec — Feb

The swell softens and the island returns to the fishing day — the lagoon's glass months for foiling and the reefs at their clearest. The surf house breathes.

Muli questions, answered (7)

How do you reach Muli from Malé?
Muli is the rare local island you can now fly to. A new airport opened on the island itself in 2025, and Maldivian flies the short hop from Malé in about thirty-five minutes — the schedule is still settling and the seats are few, so we confirm the day and fare for you before we hold one. By sea it is a speedboat of roughly two and a half to three hours, arranged through the house; the public ferry is cheaper and slower, and we book that the same way.
When is the best time to come?
It depends on what you are chasing. For calm water, beach days and diving, the dry months from about December to April are the easy season. For surf the rhythm flips — the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October, brings the swell — so we shape the stay around whichever brought you.
How many nights should you stay on Muli?
Muli is tiny — about a kilometre and a half end to end, walkable in an afternoon — and the houses are few. We tend to draw two to four nights here, long enough for a couple of channel dives, a surf or a fishing evening, and the unhurried feel of a working island that has only just opened its door.
Can you drink alcohol on Muli?
No — Muli is an inhabited island and, like the local islands, it is dry. If a glass of wine matters to your evenings, the way is a cruise or a resort visit in the wider atoll, and we can fold that into the days; on the island itself the pleasures are simpler ones.
Is there a beach where swimwear is allowed?
Muli is a living Muslim community, so the courtesy through the village is covered shoulders and knees, with swimwear kept to a designated stretch. Because the island is small and quietly emerging, we confirm exactly where that line falls with the house before you arrive rather than promise a beach we cannot place for you.
What is the diving like around Muli?
This is the reason most travellers come. Mulaku Kandu, the atoll's great channel, runs a drift past soft-coral pinnacles thick with grey reef sharks, eagle rays, barracuda and trevally — a current-fed site we keep for divers who can manage it. Mantas gather at the channel's cleaning stations through the southwest monsoon, while the drier months turn the corner over to the sharks; a full day in the water sits around US$60–90, and we set the rhythm of dives to the season.
Is there really a surf break here?
There is, and it is unusual for a local island in the central atolls. The break called Muli is a right-hander, friendly enough for intermediates yet with sections that draw in and hollow out, best on a southeast swell through the southwest monsoon. We draw the surf days around the tide and the wind.

Times are approximate and move with the season and the weather — your proposal confirms them.
