About Rasdhoo

Rasdhoo is a small round island — barely 500 by 600 metres — at the western edge of Alif Alif atoll, where the outer reef drops cleanly into the Indian Ocean. The island is the atoll capital: a working harbour, a tight grid of coral-walled lanes, half a dozen dive centres, and a community that has lived alongside the dive register longer than most. The signature dive is Madivaru, just off the western corner. A small boat leaves around five in the morning; you descend in open blue, hover at 25 metres along the channel edge, and wait. In season — December through April, peaking January to March — scalloped hammerheads patrol below, sometimes singly, sometimes in schools of twenty or more. Sightings are roughly even odds on any given morning, which is honest by the standards of pelagic diving. Manta cleaning stations and reef-shark drift dives fill the rest of the day.

Rasdhoo itineraries (4)

  • The Hammerhead Mornings3 days · experienced diversOur usual suggestion

Three pre-dawn boats to Madivaru — the blue-water hang, the silhouettes rising when the current runs right, and the patience the dive rewards. Two or three mornings is the honest minimum for the meeting.

Requires · Advanced Open Water · deep experience · recent dives

    1. Day 1The five-o'clock boat · the first blue-water hang · breakfast at the harbour after.
    2. Day 2The second dawn · the school, if the current agrees · a gentler reef dive at ten.
    3. Day 3The closing morning · the odds played once more · the log closed either way, richer.
  • The Advanced Course2 days · five adventure dives

The certification drawn where it matters — deep and navigation at Madivaru Corner, with the electives chosen to ready you for the dawn channel by week's end.

Requires · PADI Open Water (or equivalent)

    1. Day 1The deep adventure dive at the Corner · navigation over the sand flats.
    2. Day 2Three electives · the dawn channel within reach by sundown.
  • The Atoll Sampler3 days · all certified levels

Rasdhoo's gentler ledger — the Corner's drift, the turtle reef, the manta point in season, and the two wrecks within minutes of the jetty. The small atoll's whole register without the five-o'clock alarms.

    Requires · Open Water

    1. Day 1Madivaru Corner · the all-levels drift · eagle rays and the Napoleon.
    2. Day 2The turtle reef and the Reef Explorer wreck · a slow two-tank day.
    3. Day 3The manta point in season, or the channel's edge · the closing reef.
  • The Blue Week5 days · the full register

The dawn channels and the gentle ledger in one week — hammerhead mornings, manta and turtle days between, the sandbank for the surface intervals, and the atoll capital's working rhythm around it all.

    Requires · Advanced Open Water

    1. Day 1The week drawn against the current chart · dawns deep, afternoons kind.

Rasdhoo excursions (8)

  • Madivaru · the hammerhead dawnDive · Dawn · in the water by six · Best Jan–Apr

The blue-water descent off the outer corner — thirty metres with no reef in sight, the scalloped silhouettes rising from the deep when the current runs right. Even odds on any morning, honestly held; the school of twenty when it lands.

Requires · Advanced Open Water · deep experience

  • Madivaru Finolhu · the sandbankSandbank · Half day · best at low tide

The bare finolhu off the island's east — a picnic morning on untracked sand, the lagoon shading bone to emerald, the snorkel circuit waiting where the shallows fall away.

  • Madi Gaa · the manta pointDive · Morning · Nov–Apr

The cleaning station a half-hour out — up to a handful of reef mantas holding over the heads while the wrasse work. Divers at the edge, snorkellers in the light above.

  • The turtle reefWater · 2 hours

The reef that reliably produces — up to ten turtles a session, with morays and rays filling the margins. Snorkelled or dived, always unhurried.

  • The two wrecksDive · By day or night

The Reef Explorer at kind depths five minutes out, and the Queen Explorer deeper — the latter held for night dives, when the hull's new tenants come out to argue.

Requires · Open Water · Advanced for the night descent

  • The atoll capital on footCulture · 1 hour

The whole seat of North Ari in a twelve-minute circuit, taken slowly — the working harbour, the coral-walled lanes, the council office and the tea-room at the corner. Civic life at the smallest scale it keeps.

  • The dolphin duskWater · 90 minutes

The Rasdhoo–Thoddoo channel gathers spinners most evenings — engines low, the light long, the pods at their evening work.

  • Night fishingWater · Evening

Hand-lines off the reef edge as the harbour lights come up — the catch to the grill, the early bed honoured before the next dawn boat.

Getting to Rasdhoo, in full

  • Speedboat · from Malé

An hour and a bit west by scheduled boat, twice daily — met at the harbour the dive boats leave from.

  • Private speedboat

Held to your own hour for the Rasdhoo run — kit and cameras included.

  • Paired with Thoddoo

The hammerhead channel first, the farming island after — twenty minutes apart, and between them the whole argument for North Ari.

Best time to visit Rasdhoo

  • The hammerhead window · Jan — Apr

The dawn channel at its most generous — calm seas, the year's best visibility, and the schools at their most frequent. The five-o'clock boats fill; we hold the places early.

  • The manta months · Nov — Apr

Madi Gaa's cleaning station works through the dry season — the gentle counterweight to the dawn's seriousness, and the snorkeller's best card.

  • The soft season · May — Oct

The crossings chop up and the deep blue turns moodier — the hammerheads still pass, the odds lengthen, and the small atoll's lee keeps the gentler sites diving.

Rasdhoo questions, answered (6)

How do you reach Rasdhoo?
Rasdhoo is a speedboat island, not a fly-in one — it lies about sixty kilometres west of the airport, and the standard crossing is a shared speedboat from Malé in roughly an hour to ninety minutes, around US$49 each way, on morning and afternoon runs. There is also a slower public ferry a few days a week for under ten dollars, though its days shift with the season and the weather. We hold the speedboat for arrivals and confirm the seat with your house.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry months from about November to April bring the calmest weather, and they also hold the hammerhead season — sightings come most often from December through April, peaking in the new year. We would be honest that even in season the sharks are not promised; some mornings the channel gives, others it holds back. The island itself is open and easy all year round.
How many nights should you stay?
Three or four nights suit most travellers, enough to feel the island's slow pace and reach the sandbank. Divers tend to want five to seven — a week is easily filled here once the channel has you. A night or two works as a quiet stopover.
Is there a beach where swimwear is allowed?
Yes — Rasdhoo keeps a designated bikini beach, a marked stretch where swimsuits are at home. It is a living Muslim community, so elsewhere in the village the courtesy is covered shoulders and knees, an easy rhythm to keep. Water shoes are worth packing; the entry can be a little rocky underfoot.
Can you drink alcohol on the island?
No — Rasdhoo is a dry island, as all inhabited islands are, so alcohol is not sold or served in the village. If you would like a proper drink, the way to it is a day-pass at one of the nearby resorts, reachable by boat, or a liveaboard, where lunch and the bar come together for the afternoon. We arrange the crossing when the day calls for it.
Any practical things to know before arriving?
Bring enough cash: there is an ATM near the port, but excursions are usually priced in US dollars while the village often works in rufiyaa, so a little of both helps. The island is tiny, well under a kilometre end to end, with sandy lanes and no cars — you cross it on foot in minutes. A tourist SIM or eSIM, picked up at the airport, keeps you connected.

Times are approximate and move with the season and the weather — your proposal confirms them.
