About Maafushi

Maafushi was the first inhabited island to fully open to visitors after the 2009 regulation allowing guesthouses to operate alongside village life. The change shaped a generation of local-Maldives tourism — more than a hundred guesthouses, half a dozen dive shops, and a small economy of cafés, fishing trips, and offshore sandbar excursions hold here today. It is the busiest of the local islands, and the most varied: a working harbour, a long beach, a designated bikini-beach, and the closest reach to a dozen sandbanks. Maafushi is the village that tells you what local-Maldives tourism looks like at its fullest pitch — and from which the quieter islands are easily reached.

  • The First Local Days2 days · no prerequisitesOur usual suggestion

The introduction — the village read on foot, a sandbank lunch, and the nurse-shark shallows toward Gulhi. Maafushi as the country's front door, taken at private pace.

    1. Day 1The village and the working harbour · a sandbank lunch · the designated beach.
    2. Day 2The nurse sharks and the rays · the shipwreck snorkel · supper at the harbour edge.
  • The Dive Sampler3 days · certified divers

South Malé's named register — the Kuda Giri wreck against its pinnacle, Cocoa Corner's drop-off, and the channel sweep at Guraidhoo Corner. The most established dive houses of any local island run the boats.

Requires · Open Water · current experience for the channels

    1. Day 1Kuda Giri · the wreck at the giri · soft coral on every line.
    2. Day 2Cocoa Corner · the drop-off and the caves · grey reef sharks on the edge.
    3. Day 3Guraidhoo Corner · the channel drift · the log closed properly.
  • The Open Water Course3 days · PADI certification

The country's most practised classroom — confined water in the lagoon, four open-water dives on the house reefs, and the card by the third sundown. Children from eight can start their own register.

    2. Day 2Guraidhoo · the second harbour · lunch with the working fleet.

    4. Day 4The lagoon returned to · the bar-boat at dusk, if wanted.

Maafushi excursions (8)

  • The nurse sharks & raysWater · Half day

The aggregation toward Gulhi where nurse sharks and stingrays gather over the sand — snorkelled at arm's length, folded into a morning with the shipwreck and a sandbank lunch. Maafushi's signature, held private.

  • Kuda Giri · the wreckDive · Two-tank morning

A small cargo wreck set against its own pinnacle — bow at eighteen metres, stern past thirty, the whole hull gone soft with coral. The atoll's tidiest deep-spec dive.

Requires · Open Water · Advanced for the stern

  • Guraidhoo Corner · the channelDive · By current

The classic South Malé channel sweep — a thirty-metre ledge carrying sharks, eagle rays and the whole moving register of the kandu. Current is the point; experience is the price.

Requires · Open Water · drift experience

  • The sandbank lunchSandbank · Half day

The bare crescent ten minutes off the harbour — linen laid, a chilled lunch, and the lagoon doing its three-colour work around you.

  • A resort day, heldLand · Full day

The deepest day-pass menu of any local island — Rannalhi, Olhuveli, Biyadhoo and their neighbours, held with lunch and the pool for the day the village asks for a pause.

  • The bar-boat at anchorTable · Evening

The licensed boat moored offshore — a shuttle from the jetty, a cold glass over dark water, the village lights behind. The one evening the dry rule bends, held entirely afloat.

  • Gulhi & Guraidhoo · the neighboursCulture · Half day

The two quieter villages within a short boat — Gulhi's single street and shipwreck snorkel, Guraidhoo's working harbour. The local register, read in triplicate.

  • The dolphin duskWater · 2 hours

Spinners on the evening channels — the country holds some of the densest pods anywhere, and the dusk light does the rest.

Getting to Maafushi, in full

  • Speedboat · from Malé

Half an hour south by scheduled boat, several times a day — the easiest transfer in the local register.

  • Private speedboat

Held to your own hour from the airport jetty — twenty-five minutes, no schedule to read.

  • The onward hop

Maafushi as the first port — a night or two at full pitch, then the quieter islands south and west by held boat.

Best time to visit Maafushi

  • The high season · Dec — Apr

Calm half-hour crossings, the flattest lagoon, the fullest island — the sunbeds at the designated beach go early. We hold the private boats and the quieter corners.

  • The soft season · May — Nov

Choppier afternoons and short, honest squalls — the excursion fleet keeps working, the channels run greener and fishier, and the island breathes easier between boats.

  • The working port · Year-round

Maafushi's register barely closes — the sheltered western lagoon keeps the watersports and the sandbank runs alive in most weathers. The least weather-sensitive island we hold.

Maafushi questions, answered (7)

How do you reach Maafushi?
Two ways in, both from Malé rather than the airport pier. A shared speedboat crosses in about half an hour — roughly US$25–30 each way — and the house arranges the seat with the morning and afternoon runs. The government ferry is slower and almost free: about ninety minutes for a couple of dollars, most days but never Fridays. We hold the speedboat for arrivals; the ferry is there for those who would rather take the long, local way.
When is the season?
The northeast monsoon — roughly December to April — brings the dry, settled months: calm water, clear reefs, the steadiest light, with January and February the driest of all. The southwest monsoon, May to November, runs greener and quieter, with brief weather, lower rates, and the season when whale sharks and mantas move through the wider atoll. We draw the days to whichever season you arrive in.
How many nights does Maafushi ask for?
Three or four. Enough for the designated beach, a sandbank morning, a day on the water, and a crossing to a resort island — before the smallness of the place begins to show. Two nights suit a first taste; beyond four, Maafushi is better paired with a second island than stretched alone.
Is there a beach where swimwear is allowed?
Yes — Maafushi keeps a designated Bikini Beach, a marked stretch where swimsuits are at home. It is a living Muslim community, so elsewhere on the island the courtesy is covered shoulders and knees — an easy rhythm to keep, and the houses will point you to the line.
Can you drink on the island?
Not on land — like every inhabited island in the Maldives, Maafushi is dry. The drink sits just offshore: floating bars anchored off the beach, with a tender out and back, and licensed sunset and resort cruises that pour as the light goes. We can set an evening on the water, or a day at a resort island where the bar is open.
What should I know about money and getting set up?
Maafushi is the rare local island with a bank — a Bank of Maldives branch, and the first US-dollar ATM placed outside the capital. Dollars are taken almost everywhere, cards at most houses, a little rufiyaa handy for the small shops. A Dhiraagu or Ooredoo SIM, easiest from the airport on arrival, keeps you connected; the island itself is car-free and walked end to end in well under an hour.
Can you visit a resort from Maafushi?
That is part of why people come. Several resort islands lie within a short crossing, and a day-pass buys their beach, pool and lunch for the afternoon — the bridge from a guesthouse week to a single, brighter day. Prices run widely by house, from modest to a full board; we match the resort to the day you want.

Times are approximate and move with the season and the weather — your proposal confirms them.
