Soneva Jani sits inside the Medhufaru lagoon in the Noonu Atoll — five islands ringed by 5.6 kilometres of clear water. The largest, Medhufaru, runs to 150 acres. The retreat was built to feel like a castaway camp drawn at a higher resolution — villas in sustainable timber, decks open to the lagoon, a Barefoot Guardian to handle the rest. Most water villas open directly onto the lagoon with a private pool, a retractable roof above the bed, and a slide from the upper floor into the sea. Island villas tuck into the greenery — pool, white sand, and a few paces to the shore. Sixty-one villas across the property, ranging from one to five bedrooms — every one with bicycles, a walk-in minibar, and three places to sit down for dinner. The programming runs wide. A 16-inch Meade telescope rises through the floor of the observatory. A weekly barefoot dinner on North Beach. A Marine Biology Centre, a turtle rehabilitation centre run with the Olive Ridley Project, an organic garden that feeds most kitchens — and a cinema set on stilts over the water.
Arrival. 40-minute seaplane from Velana International. We time the transfer to your flight, and confirm it in writing with the rest of the stay.

Beyond the villa

A 16-inch telescope rises through the floor, with a resident astronomer for stargazing dinners, picnics and cruises. The Noonu sky is the darkest most guests have seen.
The Noonu Atoll Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre runs on-site with the Olive Ridley Project — injured turtles rehabilitated in view, released when ready.
Mushroom Hut, Chicken Coop, Vegetable Garden, Vetiver Ponds, Waste-to-Wealth — the island's working infrastructure, walked like a register.
On most villas, straight from the deck into the lagoon — the retreat's signature, and nobody outgrows it.
Split between the overwater spa at The Gathering and the island spa in the green — the wellness register runs from proper therapies to the simple medicine of a slide into your own lagoon.
A castaway occasion — vows on a sandbank, dinner under the observatory's open sky, the children sliding into the lagoon while the grown-ups hold the long table. The retreat composes occasions barefoot, and better for it.
The slide before breakfast is a tradition by the second morning.
Three storeys over water — the library, the wine cellar, Soneva Soul, and most of the kitchens under one roof.
Walk the working island — vegetable garden to vetiver ponds — and look in on the rehabilitation pools.
The telescope rises through the floor; the astronomer does the rest. Dinner waits below.
