Hurawalhi is one of a small handful of adults-only retreats in the country — a quiet island in the Lhaviyani Atoll, drawn around the world's largest all-glass undersea restaurant (5.8, named for the depth in metres below the lagoon). One island, one resort — about 400 metres long, 6.5 hectares, 90 villas. The register is calm and considered, the marine programme serious, and the dining card runs from the underwater room to a small teppanyaki counter.
Arrival. 40-minute seaplane from Velana International. We time the transfer to your flight, and confirm it in writing with the rest of the stay.

Beyond the villa

The world's largest all-glass undersea restaurant, 5.8 metres down — the lunch and dinner tastings read differently, and both are worth a sitting.
Lhaviyani holds the world's largest known population of reef mantas — the Marine Biology Centre runs workshops and held trips with the resident biologists.
Mapped properly by the retreat — the snorkel map above marks the channels, the drop-offs and the quiet entries.
Over-water pavilions on the quiet shoulder of the island — the adults-only register means the spa's hush extends well past its own walls. The retreat publishes its menu plainly below.
An adults-only island keeps an occasion grown-up — vows over the glass at 5.8, the champagne pavilion at dusk, a sandbank held for two. Quiet, considered, witnessed by the reef.
Snorkel the marked line before breakfast — the reef wakes earlier than the island.
The manta workshops set up the afternoon's trip — known cleaning stations, held small.
Over-water rooms, the menu published, the hush guaranteed by the door policy.
The undersea tasting as the reef lights change — book the glass early in the stay.
