Cocoon Maldives sits on Ookolhufinolhu — a long sandbank island in the Lhaviyani Atoll, held in a wide turquoise lagoon roughly 120 km north of Malé. It bills itself as the first design hotel in the country — the interiors are by LAGO, the Italian studio, and the register reads that way through and through: clean line, light timber, floating beds, rustic wildwood tables. 150 villas in total, three restaurants, two bars — all drawn by the same hand. The atoll holds some of the country's better diving and snorkelling — manta, dolphin, turtle, reef-shark — and the long sandbank takes weddings and sunset cuts beautifully.
Arrival. Roughly 30 minutes by seaplane from Velana International. We time the transfer to your flight, and confirm it in writing with the rest of the stay.

Close to the children's area — full bar, fresh juices, snacks, hammocks, and lounge chairs.
The pool-side bar — a live DJ every evening, pool parties through the week. The louder end of the dining card.
Beyond the villa

The first design hotel in the country — interiors and furniture by the Italian studio LAGO, end to end. The island is the showroom; the stay is the argument.
The Shipyard wrecks and Kuredhoo Express within reach — sharks, mantas, turtles and napoleon fish on the atoll's better sites.
The north end's sandbank takes weddings and sunset photographs beautifully — the island's own full stop.
The sandbank at the north end is the occasion's natural stage — the vow at golden hour, the Italian register carrying the dinner after. Held in writing with the retreat.
Six hundred metres end to end — the island read in a quarter hour, never the same twice.
The Shipyard or Kuredhoo Express with the centre; the lagoon for the unhurried.
LAGO's furniture was built for exactly this hour.
Sunset off the sandbank, dinner on the plan, the bar holding the last of it.
