Maldives marine life

Whale sharks, turtles and the reef.

Whale sharks, turtles, rays and nurse sharks — much of it within reach of a snorkel.

Some of the Maldives’ best encounters with wildlife start from the inhabited islands: whale sharks off South Ari, turtles on house reefs, rays and nurse sharks in the shallows. Each island has its own; most of what follows needs only a mask and fins.

Wild, not scheduled
Animals are found often, never on every outing — two or three chances are better than one.
Distance kept
Animals are watched from a respectful distance — no touching, no chasing.
Seasons matter
Mantas, hammerheads and calm crossings each have their months — the island pages give them.
