Maldivian food & culture
Markets, music and the island table.
The fish market at dawn, the old quarter, short eats and sweet tea, farms and the drum.
The inhabited islands are where Maldivian life goes on — the capital’s fish market, the old coral-stone mosque, tea-rooms, farms, and bodu beru, the traditional drumming. What follows is what each island is known for; gatherings and home cooking depend on the island, and we ask before we promise them.
- Dress
- Shoulders and knees covered in the villages and the capital; swimwear on designated beaches and boats.
- Dry islands
- Alcohol isn’t sold on inhabited islands; a resort visit or a licensed boat is the usual way to have a drink.
- Prayer times and Fridays
- Shops and cafés close briefly at prayer times, and Friday is the weekly day of rest — plans are timed around both.
